The Polhymnia vocal Ensemble
Founded in 1994 by Rachel Székely, this female ensemble is made
up of fifteen singers who have committed themselves with passion to the
chamber choir. The vocal skills and dedication of each and every member
have allowed the choir to find its vocation in the creation of
contemporary music and its diffusion to a large public.
Polhymnia has worked closely with composers from all horizons who have
written works especially for the ensemble: Works by George Barcos,
Nicolas Bolens, Daniel Bouldjoua, Elise Cieslak, Felicia Donceanu, Eric
Gaudibert, Jean-Louis Gand, Adrian Kreda, Jean-Paul Liardet, Massimo
Lunghi, Pierre Thoma and Julien-François Zbinden have been
performed for the first time by Polhymnia.
A classical repertory from the XVIIIth, XIXth, XXth and XXIst centuries
is the second central axe of the ensemble’s activity with special
emphasis put on the discovery and diffusion of works rarely performed.
For these reasons Polhymnia recorded two discs of little-known works
from the XXth century. This third disc entitled “Eternity”
under the direction of Franck Marcon, the artistic director since
September 2002 was recorded in the fall of 2005 under the Vde-Gallo
label, a Swiss label. It includes the first time performance of the
Swiss composer Julien-François Zbinden’s Opus 98, as well
as works by Jehan Alain, Willy Burkhard and André Caplet.
The Polhymnia vocal Ensemble has performed in Switzerland, France,
Romania, Sweden and Hungary. It represented Switzerland at the
international singing competition for choirs, the Florilège
vocal de Tours in France in 2004.
The ensemble receives subsidies from the city of Lancy and the Service
for Cultural affairs of the Department of Public Instruction of the
Canton of Geneva
